My first job was helping my stepdad repair semi-trailers. One of his senior mechanics was a character. He would poke at my youthful enthusiasm, "I'm telling you, Zach (pause)" "What's that, Mike?" "It's all just a bunch of fucking bullshit." That exchange happened a few of times a day. Back then, I thought he was just trying to get a chuckle out of me. You know, the old guy with a thick accent using foul language gag. I came to realize there was more to it than that.

Willow Leland used to be a gymnast, diver, and cheerleader. Now, she's a gymnastics coach, model, waitress, etc. I got the feeling that she is very devoted to her family and helping them out financially. Willow Leland can bend this way and that. We took these in Santa Monica on a Sunday morning. Security, or now that I think of it, the cops came around and I thought I was going to have some explaining to do, partly because of how young Willow looks. But the officer just told us we had to be careful with cars since we were taking photos in the middle of the street. Willow calmly sipped her Cactus Cooler, the officer drove off, and she resumed sharing some of her gymnastic talents. As Ice Cube says, it was a good day.

It is a charming community, almost makes you forget that you will be throwing your money away on rent. The other day, I read about Kendra Sunderland, 19, student at Oregon State University, who was arrested for filming a scandalous video in the campus library. Consequently, it appears she has dropped out of school, could face jail time and possibly have to pay hefty fines. Now think about it. No one was injured due to her "crime". Even if she had been caught in the act, nobody would have been harmed. They might have been bewildered, or offended, or even aroused, but harmed? No. Yet, some assholes decided to make an example out of her and essentially ruin her college life. Fuck you, Puritans. Whitney Westgate told me that she was raised an "Army Brat", which merely means that her parent(s) served in the military full-time. Military families are relocated frequently and the children grow up never having a distinct hometown. I am not sure if this had a lasting effect on Whitney, but I feel certain that she is one of the sweetest girls I have ever photographed. Just when I thought that the yoga pants thing had been beaten to death, I saw Whitney dawning a pair and knew I was wrong. Her flexibility and natural curves required further exploration. Vivian Campbell told me that she doesn't get to visit the beach very often. And so I said, "Get your ass over to Santa Monica!" I knew a New Jersey native would have a lively energy about her once she was out in the sun by the Pacific Ocean. The only thing she didn't seemed thrilled about was when I had her try some cartwheels for the lens. Apparently, she had never tried one in her life! All the same, she was completely positive and unshy. We had to tie this not in her leotard bottom. I cut it up trying to look like an 80s swimsuit and didn't realize how important elastic was to keeping a shape down there.
